What unit is DWT?
What unit is DWT? Deadweight – DWT is the acronym for Deadweight Tonnage. In Vietnamese, this term means total tonnage, total tonnage or tonnage of the ship. Simply put, DWT is the unit used to measure the total transport capacity of a ship. Total transport capacity here is the total volume of goods that the ship can safely transport. In particular, the volume of goods on the ship includes crew members, fuel, clean water, passengers, ballast water, supplies, etc. Therefore, if the ship carries cargo exceeding the allowable DWT level, the ship will fall. into a dangerous state, may be wrecked and sunk during transportation.
* Example: A cargo ship has a total tonnage of 20,000 DWT. This means that this ship can transport up to 20,000 DWT of goods, including the weight of the ship itself + the weight of things on board.
1 DWT equals how many tons? How to calculate?
To know how many tons 1 DWT is equal to, first remember the following general formula:
DWT = (Full Load Displacement) – (Empty Vessel Mass)
Besides Deadweight - DWT, GT (Gross Tonnage), NT (Net Tonnage) are also two terms that many people are interested in when transporting goods by sea. In fact, GT and NT are two types of capacity belonging to the capacity - Tonnage of a ship. Specifically:

Gross Tonnage (Gross Tonnage)
GT, short for Gross Tonnage, in Vietnamese this term is called total capacity. In essence, this is a measurement of the capacity of all enclosed spaces on the ship, including the volume of the chimney.
Determining a ship's GT is the basis for calculating maritime costs when transporting goods by sea. Accordingly, when calculating GT, fees such as pilot fees, registration fees, and insurance fees will be determined. In addition, it is also the basis for parties to apply various maritime conventions on shipping routes. Normally, 1GT is converted to 100 cubic feet or 2,831 cubic meters.
To help you identify the GT on a ship more easily, you can actually look at the design of the cargo ship. Accordingly, parts such as the cargo hold, 2 forward tanks, engine room, cabin, double bottom tank, mast, and compartment above the deck all belong to the ship's GT.
Net Tonnage
NT is the abbreviation for the phrase Net Tonnage, meaning net capacity. This is essentially a measurement of the capacity of the limited space on the ship. This space is calculated from the main deck downward, including space in the cargo holds, engine room area, all tanks outside the engine room, and enclosed space in the bottom of the ship.
Normally, NT is determined to calculate fees under the jurisdiction of the port authority (port authority). Therefore, in the transportation of goods by sea, determining the vessel's NT is also very important information. Based on the ship design, NT includes: cargo hold, double bottom tanks, engine room and 2 leaf bow tanks. However, NT does not include cabins, cockpits, main deck compartments, masts and bow stores.
GT calculation formula: Gross Tonnage of a ship is the capacity calculated based on the entire volume inside the ship including living rooms for crew members, space for engine rooms, and marine equipment. …(And NT is the capacity of closed spaces to store goods). GT is calculated on the basis of considering it as a "one-to-one mapping function" of the capacity. GT has two variables K and V:
GT = KV
* In there:
- V: Enclosed space inside the ship (m3)
- K: Is a multiplier that depends on the closed volume V inside the ship.
Through GT, one can calculate the DWT of each type of ship. Specifically, the following simple formulas can be applied:
- General Cargo Ship GT= 0.5285DWT;
- Container Ship GT= 0.8817DWT;
- Oil Tanker GT= 0.5354DWT;
- Roll-on/Roll-off Ship GT= 1.7803DWT;
- Pure Car Carrier GT= 2.7214DWT;
- LPG Ship GT= 0.8447DWT;
- LNG Ship GT= 1.3702DWT;
- Passenger Ship GT= 8.9393DWT.

Why are GT and NT commonly used today?
GT and NT are two terms used interchangeably with GRT and NRT. Specifically, in the past, instead of using GT and NT when determining the capacity - Tonnage of a ship, people often used the terms GRT (Gross Register Tonnage) and NRT (Net Register Tonnage). However, currently, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has replaced GRT and NRT with GT and NT.
Basically, these two terms do not have too much difference. Accordingly, it is both used to refer to total capacity and net capacity. However, when using these terms, there are still certain points you need to keep in mind. Specifically, the unit of capacity in common parlance is the ton, but the ton here is not 1 ton = 1000kg and is also different from the ton used in tonnage. When saying the GT of a ship is 1,599 tons, we must understand that its total capacity is 1,599 tons or 1,599 GT. And to convert to cubic meters, you must take: 1,599 x 2,831 = 4526.77 m3.
