History of OOCL shipping lines
OOCL was founded by Cy Tung in 1947 with the name Orient Overseas Line (OOL).
In 1969, OOL was the first ship -based shipping company in Asia to be able to transport goods by trans -Pacific container. With the above characteristics, Ool is renamed to Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL).
At that time, the Victory -class ships of OOCL could only carry 300 TEUs, far behind compared to today's Panamax ships.
The OOCL shipping lines have declared bankruptcy in the mid -1980s, which caused the Chinese Bank, Henry Fok and China Merchants to provide a $ 120 million relief.
The development process of OOCL
In April 2003, the OOCL received the OOCL Shenzhen, the largest container ship at that time with an 8.063 TEU load. In 2006, the Oocl Shenzhen lost the title in the Emma Maersk ship.
At the peak, OOCL had a fleet of over 150, with a total load of over 10 million tons and was one of the seven largest shipping lines in the world.
During its development, OOCL continuously acquired many other famous shipping lines, including: Furnness Withy, Holder Brothers, Manchester Liners, Shaw Savill, PSNC, Prince Line & Alexander Shipping Company.
In 2015, the OOCL had the largest six container ships at that time, capacity of up to 20,150 TEU each. In particular, Oocl Hong Kong, is the first container ship in the world to surpass 21,000 TEU, reaching the Guinness World Record.
In July 2017, the parent company Ooil, received an invitation to buy back worth US $ 6.3 billion from competitors from mainland China, Cosco shipping lines. The deal was completed in 2018.
